In 1874, Christopher Latham Sholes created what we now call QWERTY. It was a keyboard with a specific, intentional layout. He notices that keys, which were place on metal arms (remember we're talking about typewriters here), would jam when users began to type rather quickly. He adjusted the existing keyboard layout by moving keys which would jam frequently apart from each other. And thus, QWERTY was born!

Today, you only use a typewriter if you're feeling vintage. In reality, most people type on computers, whether it be a laptop or desktop computer. That being said, the design of our current keyboards doesn't need to take into consideration key jamming, though they still do. The second picture here is Keyboard Model 01, created by Kaia Dekker and Jesse Vincent. It takes into consideration the resting position of hands naturally, as well as the spacing of ones hands. Other keyboards, such as Radical Keyboard (not pictured) completely rearranges letter placement. Not only does Radical Keyboard not include QWERTY, but it also has a circular structure.

Consider the second design: focused on inefficiancy to make it harder for customers to smoke. By creating an open-top, this design would require more effort in retrieving a new cigarette. It also targets brand recognition through its structural design. Making this packaging rest on its side, the iconic "Marlboro" is harder to read, even from the front. This design takes into consideration the health concerns of smokers and encourages them to reducing their smoking habits.

Time for the next phase: [[Politics|politics]]All right--you have completed this web-experience. You looked at the ways in which words can change once they are personalized, learned that designs we take for granted are not the only approach you can take, and realized that politics is consistently full of contradictions that we see over and over, throughout time and space.
Click the "finish" button to receive the promised food-for-thought takeaway: [[Finish|theend]]Whether we like it or not, our society is run by politics. Nevertheless, we live in a democracy and our voices can be heard through our votes, phone calls to representatives, and town halls. We can also learn and share our ideas online. Still, even with the volume of information we have access to in this modern culture, there can be information we're still getting wrong. Explore the reach of politics in the items below.

It feels like the public can absorb what was leaked and make better, more informed decisions. However, as seen in the 2016 US election--what happens when an organization such as this takes a bias. While all of the information revealed about Hillary Clinton was true--that she used a private email server, her opinion of Bernie Sanders, and her stance on the Keystone Pipeline--hurting her image in the election, Wikileaks was mum on the Trump administration. Certainly there were secrets to be shared there too. What does it mean to have one side of a story?

While Mythbusters proved that you probably couldn't light gas on fire with a cigarette, there were real life instances of furniture catching on fire and people getting hurt or in somecases dying. The first fire-safe cigarette laws appeared in the US in 2010. Essentially, fire-safe ciegarettes contain fire retardant so that the paper is much slower to burn. While this could be seen a positive, it didn't erase the issue completely and there was still a need for fire saftey.

In reality, the initiative was so successful that it is required furniture manufacterors to make their products flame-proof. What ended up happening, however, is that the flame-retardant chemicals that were added to furniture were absorbed into people using them. Later it was discovered that these chemicals promoted health concerns, such as cancer.

There was communication between Russian officials and the Trump campaign prior to and during the campaign season. It is suspected that Russian President Vladimir Putin wanted Trump to succeed because of his tense relationship with Hillary Clinton. He openly blamed her for years for questioning his authority, promoting protests against his presidency, and interferring with Russia's internal affairs. Spain was soon allied with Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany. The propaganda here is an image of a Spanish women being killed by a Nazi missle. The message of this piece is clearly arguing that in order to protect the motherland, and in fact women and children, from their destruction, they needed to fight back against Franco and his allies.

Liberty bonds were a way for Americans to support the government as it was funding troops to fight overseas. The imagery here suggests that because enough Americans did not purcahse these bonds, that women and children died as enemy troops overtook them. The imagery again targets women in distress.

While this doesn't mean that either of these pieces were wrong or right, but it does show that tropes are used throughout societies and historical context to achieve the same goal: pull at the emotional heartstrings of the viewer and spark them into action.
